EMDR is a structured therapy that encourages the patient to focus briefly on the trauma memory while simultaneously experiencing bilateral stimulation (typically eye movements), which is associated with a reduction in the vividness and emotion associated with the trauma memories. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is an extensively researched, effective psychotherapy method proven to help people recover from trauma and PTSD symptoms. Ongoing research supports positive clinical outcomes showing EMDR therapy as a helpful treatment for disorders such as anxiety, depression, OCD, chronic pain, addictions, and other distressing life experiences (Maxfield, 2019). EMDR therapy has even been superior to Prozac in trauma treatment (Van der Kolk et al., 2007). Shapiro and Forrest (2016) share that more than 7 million people have been treated successfully by 110,000 therapists in 130 countries since 2016.

The American Psychiatric Association, the American Psychological Association, the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, the U.K. National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, the U.S. Dept. of Veterans Affairs/Dept. of Defense, The Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, and the World Health Organization among many other national and international organizations recognize EMDR therapy as an effective treatment.

Therapy is a space where personal issues are explored and considered with safety and support. It can be a place where resolution, clarity, and growth happens.

Within each of us are the resources for meaningful relationships, self view, and knowing our place in the world. I work from interpersonal, attachment, and developmental models to examine present day issues, or issues from the past (depending on where your work lies), and your internal resources and inherent skills will naturally strengthen throughout the therapeutic process.

These skills and internal resources support us during life’s challenges, and bring resources to the negative effects felt from yesterday.

A safe therapeutic relationship is of utmost importance to me and I strive to provide people with efficient and useful therapy work. We will work collaboratively so that you will identify your goals in therapy, and establish your treatment priorities.

Some of the issues I work with are: PTSD, Depression, Anxiety, Compulsive Behaviors, Sexual Trauma, Relationship and Family problems, workplace issues, career transitions. I am a Registered Psychotherapist with the Ontario College of Psychotherapists. “Tell me, what is it you plan to do With your one wild and precious life?” –Mary Oliver, “The Summer Day”

There are so many things that I love about these lines by the poet Mary Oliver. She reminds us that we have choices about what we want to do with the unique and precious life that each of us has. That word ‘wild’ can encompass beauty and pain, joy and struggle. But even when life is at its most difficult, and even when we feel least in control, we can make meaningful change.

In my practice, I support people in making these changes. I help them to identify and work through the issues that hold them back from healthy functioning. In the safe, supportive space of therapy, we work together to develop and enhance coping strategies for dealing with the challenges and changes that life brings. We construct individualized plans to draw on your own strengths and abilities and to connect with what is most meaningful to you. I hold an M.Ed. in Counselling Psychology with training in individuals and couples counselling. I am a member of the CCPA (Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association) and the OAMHP (Ontario Association of Mental Health Professionals), and I am in a Registered Psychotherapist with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario. I have experience in helping older adolescents and adults in coping with anxiety, depression, ADHD, interpersonal relationships, career transitions, and other life challenges.
